From the endless forests of the Upper Peninsula to the sweeping expanse of the Great Lakes, Michigan’s natural beauty may be the state’s greatest asset. Our scenic diversity and recreational opportunities set us apart from our neighbors in the Midwest and power a vibrant tourism industry. Those of us who live near Holland, Grand Haven and Saugatuck Dunes state parks know how much these natural assets enrich our quality of life. And through 98 state parks and recreation areas, those natural resources are conveniently accessible to almost everyone in Michigan.

In the current economic environment, we would not look favorably on any new tax, even for a cause as worthy as the state parks. We have no problem with the new proposal because it will allow people to opt out of the surcharge.

Our state park system is an important part of Michigan’s identity, and it deserves better. This new proposal has the potential to end the chronic underfunding of the system, and we believe it deserves serious consideration.
