Your Taxpayer Dollars
Michigan taxpayer dollars used to help fund our state parks. Over time, that funding was cut until it was ultimately eliminated in 2004. Michigan has one of the America’s largest state park systems, yet we are one of only two states that do not provide general fund support.
Over time, user fees such as motor vehicle passes and camping have been raised to replace some of the general fund cuts. However, these rates can only be raised so high before we price Michigan residents out of their own state parks.
